Oh My Canada…

Dear Food Buddies,

I’m in Toronto for another two weeks. (Don’t worry, you won’t even notice I’m gone.) So far…

  • I’ve been to 6 bakeries in 3 days. Total damage from one bakery alone: $100 worth of bread and pastries. And I ate them all.
  • I ate the most delicious Vietnamese pig feet stew.
  • I ate the most delicious Chinese meal that included pork soup and offal in black bean sauce.
  • I’ve noticed that people here drive soooooo slow. And everyone is so nice that they let you though when you need to change lanes last minute or when you simply want to get ahead during rush hour traffic. Incidentally, I was in a minor fender-bender yesterday. No one was hurt and only minor damage incurred. To JW who let me off so easily and was the nicest guy about it ever: thank you, not only do you look like a rock star, you rock!
  • I’ve been eating ketchup Chips; and KitKats and Diet Coke which taste much better here.
  • The last time I was here was two years ago. Nothing much has changed.
  • That’s all for now. More updates next week.

P.S. I miss Atlanta for some reason.

    Love,
    ~C.

Please bear with me while I need a couple of days to catch up on tons of email and missed school work. In the mean time, I’ve been eating a lot of happy food and waiting for a couple of exciting fights ;) Follow me on twitter to see what I’m eating…

    Back but lazy…

Ok, so I’m back and hungry at odd times of the day. I never have jet lag but food lag is a great enemy. I seriously need to decompress — two weeks of eating fattening food nonstop can’t be all good. Need to eat healthy for a week at least. Where’s self-control when you need it? I have yet to upload all the (hundreds of) pictures I took. I’m afraid I’ll be hungry again when I look at all those mouth-watering European food pictures so I may hold off on that for a couple of days. Self control. I did camp out at mom’s house all day yesterday eating home-cooked meals so that’s a good start, right? (Plus an evil side trip to Jake’s to satisfy my sister’s major sweet tooth.) Eating mom’s cooking plus watching dvds all day at the parents’ house is pure bliss. So give me a day or two to get back into the groove.

    Chloe.

    Hello 2009!

I never thought I would be able to survive even 5 minutes without a computer, much less an internet connection, but I did. And it’s so liberating. Three glorious weeks of being unplugged has done good to my psyche. I feel fabulous. And refreshed.

    I woke up to this:

    Caribbean Dec08

    I ate this (every day):

    Caribbean Dec08

And drank this at every stop:

    Caribbean Dec08

I had a wonderful time with family frolicking (and eating) in (and around) the beaches of Cozumel, Bahamas, a few more Caribbean spots, and even Miami Beach. But I seriously need to lose a few pounds. Seriously. My bottomless pit of a stomach (yes, I can eat) has me bulging in places where they shouldn’t be seen. And with my petite frame, even 4 pounds is a lot and will show considerably. Time to eat sensibly again.

In the meantime, I need to let you in on one divine indulgence:

This is the newest desert at Murhpy’s. You guys know I’m not big on desserts. More so, cheese cakes. But this Sweetgrass Dairy goat cheese cheesecake is beyond words. I had two. It comes with grilled fresh apricots. Divine is an understatement. Run, don’t walk and get yours now. Limited availability. Absolute heaven!

    Lag of sorts

Hi folks! I’m back in Atlanta after an amazing 12-day stay in Europe. I got to visit family in Mannheim, Germany for a few days then headed east to Prague for a week where I fell absolutely in love with the city. Incidentally, I’m one of the lucky ones (okay, two if you count my sister) who never suffers from jet lag. But I get a major case of eating lag. You know, getting hungry at odd times of the day. I haven’t uploaded my (thousands) of pictures yet but as soon as I get out of this lazy mood, I’ll give you guys the link. In the meantime, here’s a couple (contraband stuff I brought back from the trip):

    For very special friends:

For me and my sister: 75 screaming pounds from Germany of pure chocolate heaven! Had to buy another luggage just for these!

Be back in a couple of days after my hunger pangs subside…

    Postcards to ATL: Food

Now that I’m back in good, ‘ol Atlanta, all I can think of are all the glorious food I ate in Asia every single day. Funny, I didn’t gain a single pound. Why? Food in Asia is not “hormonized” unlike in the western world. Which is why Asians are skinny.

Yeah, I invented the word. Hormonized. Use it. I’m hoping it’ll get into the dictionary one day.

Now allow me to whet your appetite with these photos…

Basil chicken with a side of fried egg

    Tom Yum Goong

Chocolate rice with deep-fried tiny fish

Fried rice, steak, fried eggs, tomatoes, and salted egg

    Tiny deep-fried fish

    Postcards to ATL: Sights

My two-month stay in Asia is finally winding down. I really love going to this part of the world regularly. I meet so many people, see many different sights, and eat tons of different kinds of food. The short list of where I’ve been and what I did:

    • scuba diving in the remote beaches of Southeast Asia
    • spelunking in torrential rains wearing flip-flops to go to a distant yet private fruit bats cave
    • hiking in the highlands to find Indonesia’s rare Coffee Luwak (Civet coffee)
    • hike 1000 feet above sea water to visit an old monastery in the middle of nowhere
    • hike 2 miles in unfriendly terrain to swim under a remote waterfall
    • cross a deathly flash flood that swallowed the last bridge to get to the other side of the road or get stuck for days while they build another way out
    • eat specialty beef soup in front of an active volcano
    • took a propeller plane and landed on a dirt road to get to a private island in the South Pacific
    • travel 12 hours by bus just to eat rare grilled fish high in the mountains
    • traverse the famous Floating Market in Bangkok
    • shop along famous Orchard Road in Singapore
    • shop in gigantic malls of Thailand and Philippines (both have the biggest malls in the world)
    • visit Disneyland Hongkong
    • see Cambodia’s famous Ankor Wat
    • see palaces, temples, old churches
    • see mountains and fields
    • eat, sleep, shop. repeat. everyday. for two months.

Now for some pictures… (click to enlarge)

    Postcards to ATL: Hundred-dollar Coffee

So sorry for not posting sooner. Internet connection is so erratic in these parts of the world — especially since it’s raining cats and dogs right now. So I’ll make this one quick and try to post again in a couple of days when the rain-slash-tropical storm dies down.

At over one hundred US dollars a pound (yes $100), feast your eyes on the most expensive coffee in the world. Better known as Civet Coffee or Coffee Luwak, this rarest coffee comes from the highlands of Southeast Asia specifically in the countries of Indonesia and the Philippines. I literally walked for miles looking for the source of this coffee and was successful in finding the one sole shack where one farmer sells them once every blue moon.

So what makes this coffee rare and very expensive? For one, the coffee cherries are grown in the mountains in Southeast Asia. Civets or wild cats eat the coffee cherries and are then excreted. The pooped cherries are then washed then processed then roasted into coffee beans. Civets are endangered species and they only eat coffee cherries. These creatures only produce such a small amount for processing. Now your stomach might turn upside down with the thought of drinking excreted coffee but bear in mind that the cherries are first processed. The result is the most aromatic, sweetish, no-acidity-whatsoever coffee you have ever tasted.

I chanced upon a restaurant serving Civet coffee and could not pass up the chance to taste this wonder. Served in a French press with a side of condensed milk, this is by far the best coffee in the world. By the way, I paid $8 for this 6-ounce coffee which is outrageous since you can get a regular cup of coffee here for a mere 50 cents.

    Postcards To Atlanta

Hi there foodies! I’m somewhere in hot and humid Asia as I type. I thought of showing you guys a glimpse of my gastronomic experiences by starting a Postcards To Atlanta series. In its first installment, allow me to showcase my meals at 40,000 feet — I flew over 4 hours to the US west coast (food was blah), had a loooong layover, then flew 3 hours to Vancouver, and then another 13 hours to exotic Asia. Airline service was impeccable as usual and my amazing meals consisted of wonderful dishes…

To Vancouver: Chicken with Coconut Milk and Shrimp on Skewers over Glass Noodles

To Asia: I was fed way too many times. But my internet connection is getting funky so I’ll update tomorrow and tell you details about the meals above…

Next, I’ll show you what I’ve been gorging on for the last few days. Prepare to be amazed.
