Pita House

From the outside, you’d think this place is just another strip mall food joint: the sign is ordinary and the outside looks like a fast food deli complete with menus posted on the glass walls. But since it was their opening week at the time, I was determined to give it a try. And boy, was I surprised. Inside was a lovely restaurant with shiny maroon concrete floors, muted golden walls, dark wooden tables and chairs, columns, and Grecian style decoration.

The menu is typical Greek — salads, pitas, roasted chicken… nothing fancy and not extensive either. But if you want a quick bite to eat and you’re already in the neighborhood, then this is the place to try. For starters, they give you a free plate of four different kinds of dips: cucumber-yogurt, chili, honey-mustard, and garlic-mayo; with pieces of grilled pocket pita on the side. I’m saying pocket pita here as opposed to the flat doughy pita

bread without pockets. The dips provide a good way to start the meal. Mix them up and see how many combinations you can come up with (like the garlic-mayo-cucumber-yogurt-chili which isn’t bad at all). I also got a side of hummus which was very good and doesn’t leave a garlicky taste in your tongue.

I ordered the $7.95 lunch special which comes with a small pita pocket bread filled with roasted beef and fries. The meat was flavorful although on the greasy side but negligible since the otherwise dry pita soaks up much of it. I added a dollop of the dip I concocted to make it more interesting. The fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned with just a hint of salt.

For $7.95, I’d say this is a pricey lunch for the portion that you get. The pita sandwich is small even for a petite person like me and it doesn’t even come with tomato slices or lettuce or even a drink. Come to think of it, it was only half a pita bread. The side of fries had maybe 12 to 15 pieces which is good if you’re counting carbs but I’m not. The hummus came in a small saucer and good for one person only.

Service is outstanding but not enough to lure me back unless Whole Foods next door is closed.

Insider tip:

Portions are small. Order additional items. Located inside the plaza next to Whole Foods on Pleasant Hill Rd in Gwinnett between Medlock Bridge/141 and Peachtree Industrial Blvd.
