The Best Thing I Ever Ate: Spam Musubi
This week’s The Best Thing I Ever Ate is brought to you by Waikikie. Aside from rice balls (Onigiri), I also love its sister, the Spam Musubi. This tasty, fun-to-eat, Hawaiian street food traditionally consists of a block of steamed white rice topped with a slice of Spam then wrapped in a nori sheet. At Waikikie (and most places in the continental US) they elevate the musubi by adding a drizzle of sauce to the Spam, usually some kind of sweetish teriyaki sauce. But. What sets Waikikie apart is that they fry their Spam slices first so you have this crunchy outer layer. Mmmmm. So, so good.
How good? Side story. I was on my way to meet my sister for lunch and Spam musubis two days ago. The clumsy, ADHD person that I am, my car door decided, for some reason, to slam on my face and hit my forehead with such force (gusty winds that day) that I was dizzy for a few seconds. Clutching my bloody face with one hand while driving, I was faced with either going straight to the ER or get musubis. Guess which one I chose to do? As my friend G5 says, it was an extreme foodie moment. In any case, I did go to the ER after lunch and ended up with 3 stitches, a concussion, and a tetanus shot. That Spam Musubi was sooooo worth it.

Why would spam be anything but fried? On Guam, where spam rules breakfast, it’s always fried as a bacon substitute. The frying eliminates the gelatinous character that Americans regard as a turnoff.

Yeah, I only also like my Spam fried. But in San Franciso, the Spam musubis in 3 of the Hawaiian places I went to aren’t fried. I found it weird.
